Adding an eating area to your kitchen island is a popular option, if you have the space. A raised counter, creating a two tiered island adds useful space to the kitchen while separating the eating surface from the food preparation surface of the island. This type of arrangement is great for families as the children can do homework on the raised surface, while other family members can be preparing a meal. The family can spend time together, yet keep their things separate from each other. The eating area added to an island can add useful space to the kitchen or help to define the kitchen space from other areas of the house.
One con that was noted was placement of an island can disrupt the flow of a kitchen. The work flow in a kitchen revolves around a triangle of refrigerator, sink, and range. An island can actually disrupt the flow of this working triangle, causing more issues in preparation, cooking, and cleanup. It is important to have placement so there is not a dead zone in the kitchen, or an area of countertop that goes unused due to the placement of the island.
What look am I going for in the kitchen? Your kitchen can have a modern, classic, polished, homey, or rustic look, just for example. Some kitchens come with marble counter tops. Other kitchen sets have beautiful, bright hand painted decor. You may want your kitchen to look lived in, or you may want something more sophisticated. Explore several different types of kitchen sets you may be surprised at what you like best.
