Provide enough clearance. That should be enough room between your island and kitchen cabinets. Specifically, three to four feet is usually adequate. If you are in doubt, provide more space, so that your family will be comfortable around the kitchen island table. In addition, when you put in your island, make sure you measure so that you sure you have enough clearance. This will help prevent mistakes or accidents because there are things that are too close to the kitchen island.
There are plenty of accessories to go with the Kidkraft kitchen sets as well. There are several packages of fake food items that a child can whip up in no time, along with pots, pans, and dishes. For example, one of the packages has pizza and hot dogs, as well as french fries, chicken legs, sweets and even canned goods. If a parent is looking for something specific, Kidkraft toys also provide birthday cake kits and other excellent snacks. When the play food is covered, Kidkraft has sets of eating dishes and separately sells sauce pots and frying pans so that with just a few extra dollars you can have everything a kitchen needs. As well as these basic things, there are also add on items such as toasters, microwaves and refrigerators. Some of the kitchen sets come with these appliances added on but you can still purchase them separately.
One con that was noted was placement of an island can disrupt the flow of a kitchen. The work flow in a kitchen revolves around a triangle of refrigerator, sink, and range. An island can actually disrupt the flow of this working triangle, causing more issues in preparation, cooking, and cleanup. It is important to have placement so there is not a dead zone in the kitchen, or an area of countertop that goes unused due to the placement of the island.
Another positive point about an island is that it can be designed or customized to fit the needs of the owner. As mentioned above, many islands can house various appliances, or they can provide the storage space to take the appliances off of the kitchen counters. The kitchen island may also be used as a makeshift kitchen office space. A kitchen island can be somewhere to organize meal planning, cookbooks, or helping a child with homework, while still being able to keep an eye on what may be cooking.
One of the largest pros to a kitchen island is having that space for friends or family members to congregate in the kitchen area. One can place bar stools, or high seated chairs up against a kitchen island which invites that comfort zone. Most of us are aware that people tend to congregate to the kitchen area, after all it is the heart of the home.
Countertop material for the island does not have to match the rest of your kitchen countertops as long as it is harmonious with the rooms overall design. You may want to splurge on solid surfacing here, for example, and use laminate on the other countertops. A butcher block countertop is ideal for chopping, while granite or marble works well for baking purposes and for rolling pastry dough.
Despite being a single installation, a well designed kitchen island can fulfill multiple roles. One of the best ways to make this as seamless as possible is to choose a multilevel design.
