There are certainly many pros to having a kitchen island. The first pro we will look at is that of extra counter space. Having resided in homes where counter space was at a minimum, the kitchen island was a life saver when cooking for larger gatherings. The second pro would be extra storage space. Who does not need extra storage space in a kitchen. One kitchen owned was so small the laundry room next to the kitchen wound up being turned into a pantry as there was next to no storage in the kitchen.
One of the largest pros to a kitchen island is having that space for friends or family members to congregate in the kitchen area. One can place bar stools, or high seated chairs up against a kitchen island which invites that comfort zone. Most of us are aware that people tend to congregate to the kitchen area, after all it is the heart of the home.
In order to make a kitchen island work, you need a fairly large kitchen space to ensure enough space around the island to move freely. If your space is large enough to accommodate an island, then a kitchen island will provide more counter space and more storage space. In an extremely large kitchen you can create two separate work triangles, or reduce the size of the main work triangle, increasing the efficiency of your design. To help you with the design element of incorporating an island an experienced designer is input will be invaluable. The arrangement of the appliances and service supplies may change when you add an island into your design.
Two is Better Than One With the different levels, materials, and appliances that are all used to create a kitchen island, why stop with just one? Adding multiple islands creates not one, but two or more focal points for your kitchen. Multiple islands could be connected or remain separated in your kitchen to give yourself additional countertop space, gathering areas, and more. Putting an island on wheels is another way to make the island convenient, and is a perfect idea for people who love to entertain and need a space that can change in an instant.
According to the National Association of Home Builders, kitchen islands are one of the most popular kitchen design features among today is consumers. The NAHB also reports that buyers of new homes have also indicated a desire for kitchen islands as well. Actually some 80% of homebuyers consider a kitchen island to be an absolute must.
However, the added storage brought by a kitchen island is not limited to inside the island itself. While nobody wants to suspend pots and pans from the ceiling above an empty floor, doing so above an island is a more than acceptable use of the space. Indeed, when using the kitchen island for food preparation, this only works to increase the convenience.
Kitchen Islands have become so popular that this has even led to the creation of unique design styles of their own. A kitchen island can have the same design as the main counter and cabinets or it can have its own unique design.
